Riley Gibbons named to Capital District Sports Women of the Year Class of 2021

SCHENECTADY, NY – Riley Gibbons, a senior at Germantown High School, has been named as one of the 10 scholastic award recipients for 2021 by the Capital District Sports Women of the Year.

Riley, who competes in basketball and soccer, will be recognized at the Capital District Sports Women of the Year Awards Gala on Monday, August 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the GE Theatre at Proctors in Schenectady. Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, June 29 at 10 a.m. via proctors.org or through the Proctors Box Office phones, open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 518-346-6204. All tickets must be purchased online or by phone.

The Capital District Sports Women of the Year (CDSWOY) honors the best and brightest female student athletes from high schools and colleges in the Capital District of New York State. The student-athletes will be recognized for their achievements in academics, athletics, and community service. More information is provided at the website, cdswoy.com.

Academically, Riley is the Salutatorian of her class with a 96.3 average. She was the president of the National Junior Honor Society in ninth grade, and National Honor Society President in both 11th and 12th grades. She served as the Class President from 9th through 12th grades. Riley received numerous awards, including the Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement and Social Conscience, the Clarkson School Scholars Award, the Rensselaer Medal Award and the Albany City Lodge Knights of Pythias Achievement Award. Other highlights included the Gallery Cornell Admission Invitation and the RIT Innovation and Creativity Award Program. Along with her Salutatorian Award, Riley received the Taconic Life Science Scholarship Award, the Alma Rogers Senior Music Award and the John Philip Sousa Award.

Athletically, Riley received the Central Hudson Valley League Female Athlete Award. She was the Most Valuable Player for each of her soccer teams in all four seasons. She was a four-time First Team All-Star and made the Section II All-Star Team. She also played club soccer all four years. Riley was the basketball team MVP in 10th and 11th grade and was a CHVL First Team All-Star in both those seasons. Germantown did not play this past season due to the pandemic. She was the CHVL Co-MVP in 11th grade and was named to the All-State Honorable Mention Team that season.

Riley’s community service includes the Raffle for a Cause Program, which featured a month of soliciting donations from Germantown businesses to raise money for donations (a total of $1,535 was raised). She helped initiate the Germantown Chalk4Change, which raised over $300 for two organizations, the Soul Fire Farm and The Ball Project. Riley received the Carolyn Gannon Memorial Award, the Kiwanis Community Service Award and community service awards from Germantown Hose Co. #1 and the Linlithgo Ladies Auxiliary.

CDSWOY will announce the next student-athlete recipient on June 30 and Mondays and Wednesdays through July 21. A total of 10 high school and two college female student-athletes will be honored.
